Binary Alphabet Reference

The binary code alphabet maps every letter of the English alphabet to its 8-bit binary representation based on the ASCII standard. Each character is assigned a decimal ASCII code between 65 and 90 for uppercase letters and between 97 and 122 for lowercase letters, and that decimal number is then expressed in binary.

When I first started learning binary, the alphabet was the first thing I memorized. It's the most practical starting point because you can immediately decode simple messages. A friend once sent me a birthday card written entirely in binary — took me about 20 minutes to decode it with a reference sheet, but that was the day the patterns really clicked. The uppercase range is compact (A=65 through Z=90), and once you know that A is 01000001, each subsequent letter just increments by one in binary.

How to Read Binary Alphabet

The key insight for reading the binary code alphabet is recognizing the pattern in the first three bits. Every uppercase letter starts with 010, and every lowercase letter starts with 011. That single bit difference — the 6th bit from the right — is what distinguishes capital letters from lowercase ones in ASCII.

The remaining 5 bits determine which letter it is, counting from 00001 (A/a) to 11010 (Z/z). So if you see 010 00001, you know it's an uppercase A. 011 00001 is lowercase a. The math is refreshingly simple once you see the binary alphabet broken down this way.

010 00001 = A    010 00010 = B    010 00011 = C    ...    010 11010 = Z
011 00001 = a    011 00010 = b    011 00011 = c    ...    011 11010 = z

Once you internalize that 010 means uppercase and 011 means lowercase, you can decode binary text at a glance by focusing on just the last 5 bits of each byte. I keep a mental shortcut: the first uppercase letter A = 65 in decimal, so I start from there and count up. After a few minutes of practice with the binary alphabet chart above, the mapping becomes surprisingly automatic.
